The 2nd grade team and teacher-librarian collaborated on a project designed to help students step back into the past and experience what is was like to be a member of a emigrant family heading West in a covered-wagon on the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. Students were assigned a role/character, e.g., Ma, Pa, child, grand mother, grand father, blacksmith, etc., and then students were grouped into wagons.

Through classroom lessons and activities and research using LMC resources, Oregon Trail Pathfinder and MackinVIA ebooks, students immersed themselves in the day-to-day rigors and challenges faced by emigrants on the Oregon Trail. Students used a graphic organizer to record facts and cite sources and demonstrated mastery of this topic by tweeting from the trail in character. Students drew upon their research to post daily Tweets from the Oregon Train in response to a prompt from their “wagon master” via Twiducate a Twitter-like microblogging tool for students.
